About

Hannah Fischer is a dance maker from the Midwest now based in Salt Lake City, UT. Fischer has spent the bulk of her career working to make modern dance accessible and meaningful to many communities. Her research currently focuses on distance, intimacy, and the ethics of touch. She works as a cinematographer, director, choreographer, and quilter. Fischer holds an MFA in Modern Dance and a Screendance Certificate from the University of Utah. Fischer is a Certified Laban/Bartenieff Movement Analyst and received a rare Graduate Research Fellowship for the 20-21 academic year for her research on touch.

In 2017, Fischer received an Individual Artist Grant through the Indiana Arts Commission. She has received support for her creative work through the Margaret Hill Visiting Artist Endowment, the Fauman Foundation Fund, the Catherine-Dooley Grant for Peace and Justice, and was an associate artist in residence at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in 2014 and 2020. She writes for LoveDanceMore in Salt Lake City and has served on boards for Leverage Dance Theater in Saint Louis, MO, Moving Mentoring in Washington, DC, and New Industry Dance in South Bend, IN. Fischer founded New Industry Dance in 2014 as Fischer Dance and passed the director’s torch in 2018 when she relocated to Utah to pursue her MFA. In her time as a graduate student at the University of Utah, Fischer’s creative work has been presented regularly across the US, made possible by generous funding from the Graduate School, the College of Fine Arts, and the School of Dance. Fischer is enlivened by many ongoing collaborations with new friends and colleagues in Salt Lake City: Brian Gerke/Utah Valley University, Corinne Lohner/Ririe-Woodbury, Rebecca Aneloski/And Artists.
